The opioid epidemic has become a national public and safety problem affecting both adults and adolescents, and illicit opioids are contributing to the increase in opioid overdose deaths. The CDC has stated that "an estimated 1 out of 5 patients with non-cancer pain or pain-related diagnoses are prescribed opioids", that "nearly 2 million Americans abused or were dependent on prescription opioids in 2014", that "from 1999 to 2015, more than 180,000 people died from overdoses related to prescription opioids" and that "since 1999, sales of prescription opioids in the U.S. have quadrupled".
In New York State, there are various initiatives underway to address the state's current heroin and opioid crisis. While legally prescribed medications play an important role for the treatment and management of pain, there is also a 2016 mandate that requires prescribers to receive updated education on these medications, and the potential associated risks for patients.
Participants will satisfy requirements of New York State Law by completing three hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every three years. Specific elements contained within the NYS Department of Health mandated educational course content include:
In addition to satisfying the State's educational objectives, this activity offers pain reducing alternatives for managing pain in a continued effort to reduce the risk of opioid use and misuse.
